Words in Motion

Kinesthetic language learning in virtual reality

(01)

Background

Embodied theories of language propose that the way we communicate verbally is grounded in our body. Words in Motion leverages this connection to enable kinesthetic language learning. The experience is straightforward: objects in the virtual world are embedded with words in the target language and associated with an action that could be performed with the object. For instance, making strokes with a virtual brush would make the word "pintar" (Spanish for "paint") float momentarily in front of the user.

The Process

The Words in Motion SDK was built in Unity. VR experience developers can then train motion paths on objects that trigger a vocabulary widget to pop up in the target language. These actions can be chained in an editor to gamify learning experiences in a playful context. We built a sample cooking game where the player has to perform a sequence of actions in a virtual kitchen environment with the correct set of objects.
